New Delhi : The Supreme Court bench of Justice Hrishikesh Roy and Justice Manoj Misra upheld the Telangana High Court order that directed the state government to hold the State Medical Council elections and directed the state government to conduct the elections within a period of 3 months. The state government was facing allegations of converting the council into puppet by manipulating the number of elected members.
The medical council has a total 23 members of which 13 members are to be elected through elections while six members are to be nominated by the state government and four members are government officials. The state government has changed the composition of the council by reducing the elected members from 13 members to 5 members. Thus out of 23 members of council the government appointed members would have been 18 members. The supreme court has ruled that all the 13 members of the council should be elected and this quota could not be nominated by the state government.
