Focus on early detection, prevention, and long-term management of chronic diseases among children
Nagpur: In a significant step to tackle the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among children, the Maharashtra government has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Nagpur, according to an official statement.
The collaboration aims to strengthen early identification, diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of childhood NCDs through a joint effort between the state public health department and AIIMS Nagpur.
Rising Concern of Childhood NCDs
Health officials have highlighted a worrying rise in conditions such as diabetes, asthma, congenital heart disorders, sickle cell disease, obesity, and mental health issues among children across Maharashtra. Experts warn that these illnesses are increasingly affecting younger populations, making early intervention critical.
Focus on Prevention and Early Intervention
The programme will prioritise preventive healthcare by addressing risk factors that often begin in childhood, including poor diet, sedentary lifestyles, and unhealthy habits. Authorities emphasised that timely intervention can significantly reduce the likelihood of chronic diseases in adulthood.
Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure
As part of the initiative, efforts will be made to enhance the existing healthcare system by:
- Training medical personnel
- Building capacity at district-level health facilities
- Improving access to essential healthcare services
This approach is expected to ensure better diagnosis and treatment at grassroots levels.
Community Outreach and Data-Driven Strategy
The partnership will also focus on community-based outreach programmes and awareness campaigns to identify at-risk children. A data-driven strategy will be implemented to ensure timely medical support and continuous monitoring of affected cases.
Need for Coordinated Efforts
Public health experts have identified childhood NCDs as a growing challenge in Maharashtra, stressing the importance of collaboration between government bodies and leading medical institutions like AIIMS Nagpur to effectively address the issue.
