Imphal: In a remarkable act of medical expertise and presence of mind, a critical care specialist from Manipur, Dr. Loni Liriina, successfully managed a mid-air medical emergency and prevented a possible emergency landing on an Air India flight from Tokyo to New Delhi.
Medical Emergency Mid-Flight Sparks Panic
The incident took place on February 28, 2026, aboard Air India flight AI357, nearly eight hours into the 10-hour journey. Cabin crew made an urgent announcement seeking medical assistance after a 21-year-old passenger suddenly developed severe breathing difficulties and chest pain.
Doctor Steps In at the Right Time
Responding promptly to the call, Dr. Liriina—who serves as a consultant at the American Oncology Institute and Babina Speciality Hospital in Imphal—rushed to assist the patient. Upon examination, she found the passenger in critical condition, with a heart rate of around 160 beats per minute, significantly low blood pressure, and oxygen saturation levels dropping to nearly 80 percent.
The patient, who had a history of asthma, was not carrying any medication, further complicating the situation.
Limited Resources, Swift Action Saves Life
Despite limited medical equipment available onboard, Dr. Liriina coordinated with another medical professional and initiated emergency treatment. The team provided oxygen support and nebulisation, stabilising the patient within 20 to 30 minutes.
“At one point, the situation worsened, and the crew even considered diverting the flight. But timely intervention ensured that the patient remained stable,” she recalled.
Flight Continues Without Diversion
Thanks to the doctor’s swift and effective response, the flight was able to continue its journey and safely land in New Delhi without requiring an emergency diversion.
Dr. Liriina later stated that handling such emergencies is part of her routine work, adding, “We used the medicines available onboard, and everything went smoothly.”
