KGMCTA Warns of Indefinite Boycott if Government Fails to Act
The Kerala Government Medical College Teachers Association (KGMCTA) organised a statewide candlelight demonstration to draw the Kerala government’s attention to its long-pending demands. The association has been on strike since July 1, 2025, pressing for the release of pending salary dues and resolution of multiple service-related issues.
The protest aimed to highlight the grievances of government medical college teachers and urge authorities to take immediate corrective steps. According to the association, several key concerns remain unresolved despite repeated representations to the government.
Among the major demands are full payment of salary arrears, creation of adequate doctor posts based on patient load, correction of promotion timelines in line with National Medical Commission (NMC) norms, and improvement of basic facilities and treatment infrastructure in government medical colleges.
The association has also sought payment of pending Dearness Allowance (DA) arrears, resolution of pension ceiling-related issues, and assurance of safe working conditions for faculty members across the state’s medical institutions.
In a press release, KGMCTA stated that although the salary gap in the entry cadre was partially addressed, the government has not taken sincere steps to resolve major concerns, including salary arrears. As part of intensifying protests, candlelight demonstrations were conducted at all government medical colleges on February 11, 2026.
The state-level inauguration of the protest was held at Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. The event was led by State President Dr. Rosenara Beegum T and witnessed participation from around 100 individuals, including doctors, medical students, and PTA members. Unit-level protests were also organised in other government medical colleges under the leadership of respective office bearers.
The ongoing agitation includes chattapadi protest, non-cooperation, and relay satyagraha. At Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, the relay satyagraha has entered its 15th day. KGMCTA has warned that if no favourable decision is taken, an indefinite teaching boycott and OPD boycott will begin from February 16.
Further escalation plans include suspension of non-emergency surgeries and procedures from February 19 and boycott of university examination duties from February 26. However, essential services such as casualty, labour room, ICU, inpatient treatment, emergency surgeries, and post-mortem examinations will continue uninterrupted. The association expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to patients and appealed for public cooperation.
