Massive Recruitment to Address Doctor Shortage
New Delhi: The Delhi government has initiated a large-scale recruitment drive to fill 1,593 senior resident posts across its hospitals and medical institutions. The move aims to address doctor shortages in crucial specialities and strengthen patient care services across the national capital.
Applications Invited for Multiple Specialities
The Department of Health and Family Welfare has invited applications for regular appointments in a range of specialities and super-specialities, including anaesthesia, ophthalmology, neurosurgery, paediatrics, medicine, surgery, radiology, and orthopaedics.
The last date to apply is November 10, 2025, and selection will be based on interviews, likely to be conducted at Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) or its associated hospitals.
Tenure and Eligibility Conditions
Selected candidates will be appointed initially for one year, including any previous experience as a senior resident in recognized institutions. Based on performance and departmental reports, appointments can be extended annually for up to three years.
Officials clarified that private practice will be strictly prohibited during the tenure of employment.
Inclusivity and Reservation Quota
In line with the government’s inclusivity measures, 4% of the total vacancies have been reserved for persons with disabilities. The reservation applies to orthopaedic, visual, and hearing-impaired categories, subject to suitability and medical fitness norms.
Centralised Recruitment for Transparency
The recruitment is being managed by the Centralised Recruitment Committee, established last year to ensure transparency, speed, and uniformity in doctor appointments across Delhi government hospitals.
“This is one of the largest hiring initiatives in recent years and will ensure uninterrupted services in high-demand departments,” a senior official told TOI.
Extended Eligibility to Fill Acute Shortages
To tackle acute shortages in departments such as radiology and anaesthesia, even doctors who have already completed three years of senior residency but wish to continue are being allowed to apply for interviews under the new system.
Committee Structure and Oversight
The Centralised Recruitment Committee, approved by the Lieutenant Governor in September 2024, is chaired by the Dean of MAMC and includes the Director-General of Health Services (DGHS) and senior representatives from the services department. The committee oversees recruitment for both junior and senior residents across all government hospitals in Delhi.
Hospitals and Vacancies Distribution
Vacancies are distributed across several key hospitals:
- Lok Nayak Hospital – 242 posts
- GTB Hospital – 205 posts
- Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital – 178 posts
- Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Hospital – 162 posts
- Burari Hospital – 122 posts
- Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital – 86 posts
- MAMC – 85 posts
Among specialities, anaesthesia leads with 270 vacancies, followed by obstetrics and gynaecology (237), paediatrics (191), medicine (157), surgery (141), radiology (104), and orthopaedics (102).
Filling All Vacancies Within This Fiscal Year
Officials have directed hospitals to complete the interview and appointment process within the current financial year. The health department expects the drive to boost manpower, enhance patient care quality, and reduce waiting times in busy departments across Delhi’s hospitals.
