West Champaran (Bihar): In a shocking case of alleged medical negligence, a child suffering from high fever was mistakenly administered an anti-rabies vaccine instead of fever treatment at Bagaha Sub-Divisional Hospital, sparking outrage among family members and renewed calls for accountability.
The Incident
- The child, a resident of Pipariya, was taken to the hospital with a 104°C fever.
- In the OPD, the on-duty doctor inadvertently prescribed an anti-rabies vaccine.
- The medicine counter staff administered the injection, unaware of the mistake.
The error came to light when hospital staff asked the family to return on September 1 for a fourth vaccine dose — a schedule typically followed in dog-bite cases.
The child’s grandfather, puzzled by the advice, sought clarification and was shocked to learn that the patient had already received three doses of the rabies vaccine by mistake.
Family’s Reaction
The family was left stunned and accused hospital staff of gross negligence, demanding strict action against those responsible.
Hospital Clarification
Deputy Superintendent Dr Ashok Kumar Tiwari explained that:
- During OPD hours, Dr Arun Kumar Yadav was assigned to post-mortem duty.
- Dr Bharti was handling the OPD.
- A mix-up occurred, resulting in the child being given a prescription meant for another patient.
Dr Tiwari assured that the injection posed no health risk and that the child later received appropriate fever treatment and medicines.
Ongoing Demands for Action
Despite assurances, the child’s grandparents continue to demand disciplinary action against the staff involved.
