FIR Filed After Court Orders Probe Into Forgery, Criminal Intimidation; Infant’s Death and Mental Trauma Cited
Lucknow: In a deeply troubling case, four doctors from King George’s Medical University (KGMU) — including the Vice-Chancellor — have been booked for criminal intimidation, forgery, and cheating after being accused of performing a tubectomy without consent during a C-section delivery in October 2022, which also resulted in the death of the newborn.
The First Information Report (FIR), lodged at Chowk Police Station on a court directive, follows allegations by the patient’s husband that the sterilisation was carried out despite their written refusal and that the consent form was forged. He further accused the doctors of threatening to withhold treatment when the matter was questioned.
Charges Filed
The FIR invokes serious sections of the Indian Penal Code:
- Section 420 – Cheating
- Section 338 – Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life
- Sections 467 & 468 – Forgery and use of forged documents
- Section 506 – Criminal intimidation
According to a report by Free Press Journal, the incident occurred at Queen Mary Hospital under KGMU. The patient was admitted on October 4, 2022, and delivered a baby boy via caesarean section the following day. The child, placed on a ventilator due to health complications, died shortly thereafter.
It was only later, the family claimed, that they discovered the unauthorised tubectomy had also been performed during surgery. Presenting the original consent form, the husband alleged that signatures were forged to facilitate the sterilisation.
Allegations of Intimidation and Inaction
The complainant also stated that doctors threatened to stop treatment if he pursued legal action. Despite initially approaching the police and filing multiple complaints with the Chief Minister’s Office, Women’s Commission, and Human Rights Commission, no action was taken, he alleged.
Left with no alternative, the family shifted the woman’s treatment to Hardoi and eventually approached the court on July 20, 2024, leading to the current FIR being registered.
The woman has since reportedly developed mental health issues following the loss of her child and the irreversible sterilisation procedure, further intensifying the family’s call for justice.
KGMU Responds
KGMU spokesperson Prof. Sudhir Singh responded to the allegations, stating:
“King George’s Medical University strictly follows all rules and laws. We have a legal cell that will study the documents once received and act accordingly. We will fully comply with the legal process.”
