GORAKHPUR: In a shocking development from Sant Kabir Nagar district, the owner of Sans Hospital and Trauma Centre, Ramjeet Bharti alias Ramji Rao, has been arrested for the murder of a 25-year-old receptionist nurse, Mamta Chaudhary.
Mamta, a resident of Pahura village in Basti district, was found dead on Tuesday in a hospital room. Acting on a complaint filed by her grandfather Sant Ram, local police registered a case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The arrest was made near Kante Highway on Tuesday, Superintendent of Police Satyajeet Gupta confirmed during a press briefing on Wednesday.
According to the police, two mobile phones and the hospital’s DVR system were recovered from the accused. During interrogation, Ramjeet confessed to having been in a relationship with Mamta. He alleged that she had recently begun speaking to another hospital staff member, Abhishek, which created tension between them.
In his statement, Ramjeet said he confronted Mamta on Monday night, calling her to the hospital terrace and demanding she end her conversations with Abhishek. When she refused, he slapped her and attempted to strangle her, but was stopped by another staff member, Shazia Khatoon.
The next morning, taking advantage of a power outage and non-functional CCTV cameras, Ramjeet allegedly entered the rest room and strangled Mamta to death. He later tried to stage the death as natural and informed her family before fleeing the scene with her phone.
Police say further investigation is underway, including digital forensics from the seized devices and CCTV footage to verify the timeline and other possible accomplices.
