Probe ordered as health minister announces compensation; CM Soren calls incident ‘extremely unfortunate’

A tragic accident at Jamshedpur’s Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Hospital on Saturday claimed the lives of three patients and injured two others after multiple corridors on different floors of the hospital collapsed in a domino-like sequence.

Structural Collapse Spans Three Floors
The incident occurred around 4 p.m. when the third-floor corridor of the Medicine Department gave way, leading to the collapse of corridors on the second and first floors as well. The first-floor section housed the Women and Maternity Department, adding to the scale of the tragedy.

Rescue Ops Save 13, Three Dead Confirmed
Rescue teams from Civil Defence and Tata Steel responded swiftly. Jamshedpur Deputy Commissioner Ananya Mittal confirmed that out of 15 people trapped under the rubble, 13 were rescued. Two deaths were reported initially, and a third was confirmed later in the evening.

Compensation Announced, Committee Formed
Jharkhand Health Minister Irfan Ansari announced compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those injured. A high-level inquiry committee has been constituted under the Additional Deputy Commissioner, with a 48-hour deadline to submit findings.

CM Soren Calls for Action Plan
Chief Minister Hemant Soren expressed grief, calling the incident a result of neglect toward a dilapidated structure. “A concrete action plan is essential to avoid such tragedies in the future,” he stated, directing immediate action from the health department.
