Srinagar: The medical community in Jammu & Kashmir is mourning the heartbreaking loss of a young intern doctor at Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS), Srinagar. The intern, identified as Dr Tariq-ul-Islam, allegedly contracted a severe infection while treating patients on duty. He was only months away from beginning his post-graduation.
Continued Duty Despite Illness
Colleagues revealed that Dr Tariq had been unwell for several days but continued to work due to duty pressure. His health deteriorated rapidly as his blood pressure dropped to a critical level, resulting in heart failure. Despite immediate medical intervention, he could not be saved.
Collapse After Late-Night Duty
A Facebook post detailing the incident mentioned that Dr Tariq had been struggling with his health for weeks but was unable to take leave. He reportedly worked until 2 a.m. the night before collapsing. When rushed to the emergency department, he was in severe distress, showing extremely low blood pressure and signs of cardiac failure.
Moved for Advanced Care, But Too Late
Doctors immediately shifted him to SKIMS for advanced cardiac treatment, but his condition was already critical. Despite all efforts, he could not be revived. The post described him as a hardworking and sincere medical student, urging other medicos to prioritise their health over relentless work schedules.
Colleagues Highlight Harsh Working Conditions
A doctor mourning his death on X (formerly Twitter) wrote that Dr Tariq remained on the frontline, tirelessly treating patients despite intense fatigue and exposure. He emphasised that doctors fight silent battles daily against suffering and death, often without adequate protection or recognition. He also pointed out that Dr Tariq earned only ₹12,000 per month, calling it a painful reminder of how undervalued medical interns are.
JKSA Expresses Deep Sorrow
The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) expressed profound grief over his demise. They remembered him as a dedicated, humble, and compassionate young doctor who touched many lives. The association prayed for peace to the departed soul and strength to his family during this irreparable loss.
SKIMS Management Pays Tribute
SKIMS management also issued a condolence message on X, calling his death “an irreparable loss.” They recalled his commitment, sincerity, and promising future in the medical field and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.
Demands for Compensation and Support
Dr Mohammad Momin Khan, National Executive of FAIMA and Vice President of AIMSA, expressed deep grief and urged authorities to provide ex-gratia compensation under the Employees’ Compensation Act. He stressed the importance of ensuring support for young doctors who serve under difficult and risky conditions.
