
Bengaluru: Dr Mahabaleswara Maiya, a veteran medical educator and physician, passed away on Sunday in Bengaluru at the age of 92, marking the end of an era in Indian medical academia.
Dr Maiya’s medical journey spanned over six decades. A Mysore MBBS graduate, he held multiple prestigious fellowships including FRCP (London, Edinburgh, Glasgow), FICP, and FICC (India). From 1964 to 1980, he taught at Karnataka’s top government medical colleges, including KMC Hubli, Bellary Medical College, and Bangalore Medical College.
A pioneer in medical conferences and CME programmes, Dr Maiya also led the Karnataka panel on fluorosis (1971–75) and published 18 research papers. He contributed to the API Textbook of Medicine (VII & VIII Editions) and held editorial roles in various CME publications.
He was honoured with several awards, notably the Distinguished Member award by the API (2003) and Infosys Award for Medical Excellence (2006). At the time of his passing, he was Emeritus Chairman and Consultant Physician at Rangadore Memorial Hospital, Bengaluru.
Dr Maiya’s demise is a profound loss to the medical community. His dedication to teaching, research, and patient care will remain a lasting legacy.
