Facility to Enhance Regional Healthcare with 560 Beds, Gynaecology, Neonatal and Pediatric Surgery Units
Vellore: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Wednesday inaugurated the Pentland Government Multi-Speciality Hospital in Vellore, a major public healthcare initiative built at a cost of ₹197.81 crore. The newly constructed 560-bed facility, spread across seven floors, will offer specialized services in gynaecology, obstetrics, pediatric surgery, and neonatal care. The foundation stone for the facility was laid by Stalin on August 22, 2023.
In addition to the hospital launch, the Chief Minister also virtually inaugurated seven new buildings for primary health centres and two health sub-centres, constructed at a combined cost of ₹7 crore, according to a PTI report.
During his two-day official tour of Vellore and Tirupattur districts, Stalin was given a rousing welcome at Katpadi station. People lined the streets to greet him as he made his way to the hospital venue. The event saw participation from key ministers, including Ma Subramanian (Health) and Duraimurugan (Water Resources), along with senior officials.
The CM also interacted with the public, receiving petitions and distributing welfare benefits. Notably, he handed over appointment orders to a daily wage earner appointed as a hostel warden and distributed housing pattas to 12 individuals, marking a larger allotment of 21,776 pattas across the region.
However, the inauguration drew criticism from Leader of Opposition and AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami, who questioned the staffing of the new hospital. “Is it a multi-speciality hospital or just a publicity building?” he asked, pointing to vacant posts of doctors and medical staff.
We had earlier reported that the Tamil Nadu government is also setting up a 750-bed multispecialty paediatric hospital at Guindy’s King Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research campus, with an investment of ₹487.66 crore.
