Jalaun: The body of an infant, reportedly partially eaten by dogs, was discovered dumped in a garbage heap at the district women’s hospital in Lalitpur, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
According to Medical Superintendent Meenakshi Devi, Sangeeta, a resident of Bahadurpur village in the Madawara block, was admitted to the hospital on February 9 with labor pains. She gave birth to a premature baby at 6:50 pm that day. Due to severe brain and skull underdevelopment, the infant was transferred to the Special Newborn Care Unit, but sadly passed away at 7:30 pm on the same day.
“The hospital then handed over the body to the family,” said the superintendent.
However, on Tuesday, the hospital was informed about an infant’s body being found in the garbage, and the identification band confirmed it was Sangeeta’s baby. The body was subsequently moved to the mortuary and sent for a post-mortem.
Akhilesh, the infant’s father, claimed that a hospital nurse had instructed them to hand over the body to an individual who would cremate the baby for Rs 200. “It appears that the body was discarded instead of being cremated,” he added.
