Agartala | In a shocking incident of violence against medical professionals, two on-duty doctors at the emergency department of Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital in Agartala were allegedly attacked and verbally abused by the relatives of a patient early Sunday morning.
One of the injured doctors, Dr. Litan Das, sustained multiple injuries during the assault and was admitted to the same hospital for treatment. His condition is reported to be stable, according to officials quoted by news agency PTI.
The incident occurred around 3:45 AM when Bimal Sarkar, who had allegedly consumed alcohol laced with poison, was brought to the hospital by his sons, Tapan Sarkar and Bapan Sarkar. According to Dr. Shishendu Dhar, head of the emergency department, the two men became aggressive while the doctors were attending to the patient.
“They not only verbally abused the doctors but physically attacked Dr. Litan Das and Dr. Abhiek Deb—knocking them to the ground,” Dr. Dhar told reporters. He added that private security personnel present at the scene failed to act against the attackers.
“It is very disturbing that despite providing the best possible care, our doctors were assaulted. We feel extremely insecure while doing our duty,” Dr. Dhar added.
Deputy Medical Superintendent Dr. Kanak Chowdhury confirmed that a police complaint has been filed, and authorities have launched a manhunt for the accused. “Police visited the hospital and have carried out raids, but no arrests have been made yet. A formal FIR will be registered by the Medical Superintendent on Monday,” he said.
The attackers reportedly fled the hospital after the incident, leaving their father behind.
The assault has once again highlighted the rising incidents of violence against healthcare workers in India and has triggered concern over the lack of security for medical personnel, especially in emergency departments.
