In response to mounting public criticism over the alleged malfunctioning of the state-run Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital and concerns about the lack of treatment facilities leading to occasional patient deaths, senior health officials held an emergency press conference. Health Secretary Kiran Gittye, GBP Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Shankar Chakraborty, and Health Director Tapan Majumder aimed to clarify the hospital’s achievements and efforts to address these concerns.
Hospital’s Recent Achievements
Health Secretary Kiran Gittye presented a detailed report on the hospital’s recent performance. Over the past three months, GBP Hospital has successfully conducted 5,409 surgeries across various departments. Notable statistics included:
- 2,425 surgeries in the Surgery Department
- 2,374 surgeries in the Orthopedic Department
- 515 surgeries in the ENT Department
- 95 surgeries in the Neurosurgery Department
Gittye highlighted that 99% of these surgeries were planned, with scheduled dates and a long waiting list of 158 surgeries.
Ongoing and Upcoming Developments
Further detailing the hospital’s operations, Gittye shared additional data:
- 1,638 patients underwent echo-cardiography tests in the last three months
- GBP Hospital has 13 super-specialty departments and 5 broad super-specialty departments
- The hospital operates with a capacity of 1,413 beds
Gittye also spoke about the hospital’s academic impact, with 150 students admitted to the MBBS course each year and 89 students admitted to postgraduate medical courses.
Healthcare Initiatives and Patient Welfare Schemes
The Health Secretary further discussed the hospital’s contribution to national healthcare schemes:
- 14,222 patients treated under the Pradhan Mantri Jana Arogya Yojana
- 7,003 patients treated under the Mukhya Mantri Jana Arogya Yojana
In response to the growing number of cardiac patients, Gittye revealed plans to set up a separate stroke and cardiac arrest ward and a Cath-Lab. An allocation of Rs 13 crore has been made for the Cath-Lab, and additional developments are in the pipeline.
