Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh: Highlighting the crucial role of ethics in healthcare, Dr. Daggumati Sreehari Rao, Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Medical Council (APMC), addressed postgraduate students and house surgeons at Sri Venkateswara Medical College during an orientation programme themed ‘Public Health — Ethics’.
Dr. Rao, a senior radiologist with nearly 30 years of clinical experience, called on budding doctors to strictly uphold professional ethics in all aspects of patient care. “Ensure accurate documentation, comprehensive case history, prompt diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and regular follow-ups. These are not just medical responsibilities — they are ethical obligations,” he said.
He also cautioned young medical professionals to maintain professional boundaries with patients, stressing that ethical behavior builds trust, strengthens the doctor-patient relationship, and enhances one’s career over time.
“When these steps are followed in letter and spirit, you are certain to win the hearts of patients and also climb the career ladder,” he noted.
Call for Compulsory Ethical Training
Dr. Rao proposed that ethical orientation workshops be made mandatory for all house surgeons in medical colleges across the state. The idea was well received by the attending medicos, who expressed enthusiasm for conducting similar sessions regularly throughout the academic year.
