vThrissur Doctor Brings Home Double Gold from World Medical Games in SpainDr. Alwin Antony Wins 100m and 200m Sprint Titles, Represents India and Kerala with Distinction

Thrissur: Dr. Alwin Antony, Associate Professor of Community Medicine at Government Medical College (GMC), Idukki, has achieved international acclaim by clinching two gold medals at the World Medical Games 2025 held in Lloret de Mar, Spain. The global sporting event, widely regarded as the “Olympics for healthcare professionals,” saw participation from over 50 countries.

A native of Alappad in Thrissur, Dr. Alwin was the sole representative from Kerala at the Games, and his triumph in the 100m and 200m sprint categories brought glory not just to the state but to the entire nation.

Dr. Alwin’s journey into competitive athletics began as a personal pursuit of fitness but soon turned into a structured training regimen. With support from his students at GMC Ernakulam and Idukki, as well as encouragement from the Indian Medical Association’s (IMA) Cochin chapter, his passion for sprinting was rekindled.

“I trained under Asian Games gold medallist and Arjuna awardee Joseph Abraham. I won silver medals at the IMA national sports meets in Vijayawada and Aurangabad, and a gold at the MAC Open National Masters Athletics Championships. These experiences helped me perform well at the World Medical Games,”
said Dr. Alwin.

Overwhelmed by the emotional significance of representing India on a global stage, Dr. Alwin shared:

“Competing against elite athletes from countries like France, Mexico, and Algeria and then winning gold was truly unforgettable.”

Dr. Alwin previously secured silver medals in 100m and 200m events at the IMA National Sports Meets held in Vijayawada (2023) and Aurangabad (2024), and a gold at the 2025 MAC Open National Masters Athletics Championships.

Lauding his accomplishments, Dr. Jacob Abraham, President of IMA Cochin, stated:

“Dr. Alwin is not only an exceptional doctor but also a remarkable athlete. We’re proud of his achievements and confident he will continue to bring laurels to Kerala and India.”

Since its inception in 1978, the World Medical and Health Games have become the most prestigious international sporting event for healthcare professionals, drawing over 2,500 participants annually. Dr. Alwin’s success is a testament to the growing spirit of athleticism among India’s medical fraternity.
