Tadong doctor loses Rs. 5.07 lakhs in online share trading scam

Gangtok: A doctor from Daragaon, Tadong here recently lost Rs. 5.07 lakh in an online share trading scam. The doctor, who was new to the stock market, was tricked by a group of scammers posing as stock market experts on a WhatsApp group. The doctor who had just begun investing through the legitimate platform Groww, was added to a WhatsApp group named “Sharekhan Club 369” on May 28 without his consent. The group had 200 members and had a person by the name “Professor Abhiram Eleswarapu” claiming to be the CEO of BNP Paribas Group and owner of Sharekhan. The group also had a coordinator who went by the name “Donna Anderson”.

Donna Anderson reportedly recommended the doctor to buy “quality stocks” daily and also sent him private messages with stock recommendations. Trusting the recommendations, the doctor started investing in the stock market and later, he was advised to download an app called “Pro Sharekhan” for investing in institutional stocks and was directed to a website. Subsequently, he was duped by of Rs.5,07,014 by the scammers according to a police report.   The police have registered a case against unknown person(s) under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Information Technology Act.
