Dr Ramesh Babu Sustains Multiple Injuries; Attacker Held for Attempted Murder
Srivilliputtur, Tamil Nadu: In a shocking act of violence, a 50-year-old doctor was brutally stabbed multiple times outside his clinic in Koonankulam’s New Street on Monday night. The attacker, reportedly motivated by a long-standing grudge dating back to 2019, was arrested by police soon after the incident.
The victim, identified as Dr Ramesh Babu, sustained serious stab injuries to his abdomen, back, and thigh. He was immediately rushed to the Srivilliputtur Government Hospital, where he works as a medical officer, and is currently in stable condition, officials confirmed.
Attack Linked to 2019 Court-Mandated Social Service
According to police reports, the accused had been ordered by a local court in 2019 to perform social service at the same hospital where Dr Ramesh worked. During this period, he reportedly made derogatory remarks about other doctors, for which Dr Ramesh reprimanded him.
On Monday around 9 p.m., as Dr Ramesh was locking up his clinic and heading home, the attacker — who had been waiting outside — suddenly lunged at him with a knife, shouting angrily about the past incident. He stabbed the doctor multiple times before fleeing the scene.
The victim later regained consciousness and identified the assailant to the police. Acting swiftly, police registered a case and arrested the accused under charges of:
- Attempt to murder
- Criminal intimidation
- Use of abusive language
Rising Violence Against Doctors
This disturbing case comes amid a rise in violent attacks on healthcare professionals across India. Recently in Punjab’s Moga district, two miscreants posing as patients shot a doctor at close range inside his nursing home, while another incident in Ahmedabad involved a brutal stabbing of a doctor by a patient and attendants over a medico-legal case (MLC) report.
The medical community has raised concerns over increasing threats to doctor safety, calling for stricter enforcement, improved security protocols, and fast-track legal action in cases of assault on healthcare workers.
