The process to resume operations in the old emergency ward of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has officially begun, nearly 18 months after it was shut down following a shocking incident that shook the medical community.

Emergency Ward Closed After Brutal 2024 Incident

The old emergency ward was closed after a horrific case of rape and murder of a third-year postgraduate trainee on August 14, 2024. The incident led to widespread outrage and vandalism within the hospital premises, forcing authorities to shut down the facility indefinitely.

Since then, emergency services have been operating from the ground floor of the trauma care building. Initially intended as a temporary solution, the arrangement has continued far longer than expected.

Temporary Facility Under Scrutiny After Patient Death

Serious concerns regarding the temporary emergency setup surfaced recently after the death of a 61-year-old patient. According to reports, the patient was directed to use a ‘pay-and-use’ restroom located about 50 meters away from the emergency building.

The patient, who was already experiencing breathing difficulties, reportedly collapsed while heading toward the restroom after bleeding from his nose and mouth. The incident has raised questions about patient safety and infrastructure gaps in the interim facility.

Repair Work and Clearance Process in Progress

Medical Superintendent and Vice-Principal Saptarshi Chatterjee stated that it is too early to confirm a reopening date.

“We have extensive cleaning and repair work to carry out. Some civil and electrical works are still pending,” he said, adding that operations may resume either in phases or all at once depending on the progress.

He also noted that cleaning work will begin only after receiving clearance from investigating agencies.

Inspection Scheduled for April 2

A detailed inspection of the old emergency ward is scheduled for April 2, according to junior residents’ representative Trinesh Mondal. The inspection will determine the extent of work required before reopening.

Earlier this week, the hospital administration held a joint meeting with Public Works Department engineers, police officials, and junior doctors to discuss the roadmap for restoration.

Long-Awaited Restoration

The reopening of the old emergency ward is seen as crucial for improving patient care and easing pressure on the current temporary facility, which has been under strain due to prolonged usage.

With inspection and repair plans now underway, patients and healthcare workers alike await a safer and more efficient emergency infrastructure at the hospital.
