Delhi: Hundreds of retired doctors who served tirelessly in Delhi’s government hospitals for over 25 years are now struggling for their rightful pensions. Despite winning several legal battles, they continue to be paid under the New Pension Scheme (NPS), despite having joined before its introduction in 2004.
The Pension Struggle
Doctors who retired from positions with salaries of over ₹3 lakh per month are now receiving only ₹8,000–₹9,000 as their pension. Many claim this is not enough to sustain basic expenses in today’s economy.
Legal Battles and Allegations
- Dr. Reeta Mongia, a retired government doctor, lamented, “I can barely afford medicines and groceries with this pension, while others on regular posts get over ₹1 lakh per month.”
- The Delhi High Court had ruled in favor of the doctors, stating that those appointed in 1996, 1997, and 2002 should receive full pension benefits under the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).
- However, the Delhi government treated their employment as fresh from 2009, stripping them of seniority, promotions, and rightful pension benefits.
Wider Impact and Mental Stress
More than 500 serving doctors are also worried about facing the same fate upon retirement.
- A doctor from DDU Hospital, speaking anonymously, said, “At 55, I fear I won’t have financial security after retirement. The government needs to act before more doctors are left struggling.”
Voices from Retired Doctors
- Dr. Yogendra Gupta (Retired in 2014): “I haven’t received even a single rupee in pension.”
- Dr. RK Chopra (Retired in 2024): “With ₹9,000 a month, I have to depend on my children for survival.”
- Dr. Jaishree: “The system has turned a blind eye to the very doctors who once stood on the frontline protecting public health.”
Demands from the Government
- Scrap restrictive cadre rules introduced in 2009.
- Recognize seniority from 1996 for affected doctors.
- Restore the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) for eligible doctors.
- Refund deductions made under NPS.
Court Case Still Pending
Despite multiple hearings, the case remains unresolved in the Delhi High Court, leaving hundreds of doctors uncertain about their financial future.
