Bikaner: Rajasthan Health Minister Gajendra Singh’s remarks regarding the condition of six women who developed severe complications after Caesarean (C-section) deliveries at PBM Hospital in Bikaner have sparked a major political controversy, drawing criticism from opposition leaders and raising fresh concerns over maternal healthcare services in the state.

The controversy erupted during the minister’s visit to PBM Hospital, the largest government healthcare facility in Bikaner, where he inspected the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) following reports that six new mothers suffered serious post-operative complications after undergoing C-section procedures.

Minister’s Comment Goes Viral

When questioned by reporters about the condition of the affected women, the minister reportedly pointed towards the Medical College Principal and remarked, “Did these pregnant women arrive at PBM Hospital in a critical condition, or did they come dancing and singing?” The statement was interpreted by many as suggesting that the patients were already critically ill before being admitted to the hospital.

The comment quickly gained attention on social media and triggered widespread criticism from political leaders and members of the public, who termed the remarks insensitive given the seriousness of the situation.

Maternal Health Under Scanner in Rajasthan

The incident comes at a time when Rajasthan’s public healthcare system is facing increased scrutiny over maternal healthcare outcomes. Last month, five women reportedly died due to kidney failure after undergoing C-section deliveries at a medical college hospital in Kota.

In another incident, a pregnant woman died at the Government New Medical College Hospital (NMCH) in Kota following post-surgical complications. Subsequent investigations reportedly pointed to systemic deficiencies, including inadequate post-operative monitoring, poor infection-control measures in operation theatres, and allegations surrounding the use of counterfeit or substandard Oxytocin injections.

The latest complications involving six women at PBM Hospital have further intensified concerns regarding patient safety and quality of maternal healthcare services in government hospitals across the state.

Inquiry Committee Constituted

In response to the incident, hospital authorities have constituted an inquiry committee to determine the cause of the complications suffered by the six patients. Officials are expected to examine medical procedures, post-operative care protocols, and other factors that may have contributed to the adverse outcomes.

Protests Erupt Outside PBM Hospital

The minister’s visit was marked by protests from Youth Congress workers, who gathered outside the hospital demanding accountability and transparency in the matter. Reports indicate that some protesters attempted to enter the hospital premises, leading to a police lathi-charge.

A separate confrontation involving Mahila Congress workers near the hospital gate reportedly resulted in several women falling on the road during the commotion, further escalating tensions surrounding the issue.

Opposition Leaders Condemn Remarks

The minister’s statement drew sharp criticism from opposition leaders across Rajasthan. Barmer–Jaisalmer MP Ummeda Ram Beniwal described the remarks as “extremely irresponsible, insensitive, and regrettable,” questioning the government’s response to serious healthcare concerns.

Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) chief Hanuman Beniwal also criticised the comment, stating that it was inappropriate for a minister responsible for public health to make such remarks about critically ill mothers.

Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot termed the statement “shameful and unfortunate,” alleging that instead of fixing accountability within the healthcare system, the government was attempting to suppress opposition voices through force.

Growing Demand for Accountability

As investigations continue, healthcare experts and opposition leaders are demanding greater accountability and transparency in the functioning of government hospitals. The outcome of the inquiry into the PBM Hospital incident is expected to play a crucial role in addressing concerns over maternal healthcare standards and restoring public confidence in Rajasthan’s healthcare system.
