Pune: The Lata Mangeshkar Medical Foundation (LMMF) has announced plans to establish a 1000-bed super-speciality hospital in Nandoshi, off Sinhagad Road, Pune. Named the Lata Mangeshkar Institute of Medical Sciences (LMIMS), the facility is envisioned as one of Asia’s largest medical institutions, aiming to provide world-class healthcare.
Project Announcement and Tribute Event
The announcement was made during the tribute event Mee Lata Dinanath, held on September 28 to mark the 96th birth anniversary of the legendary singer. During the program, her brother and music composer Hridaynath Mangeshkar formally unveiled the project, calling it a “fitting tribute” to her contributions to Indian music and culture.
Project Details and Timeline
Dr. Dhananjay Kelkar, Trustee of LMMF, confirmed that the foundation has submitted the project plans to local authorities. Speaking to the Indian Express, he said, “Plans have been submitted to authorities for permission, and we hope to commence the work in December this year. The aim is to make it one of Asia’s largest hospitals.”
The hospital is planned on a 40-acre land parcel, and the foundation aims for early completion. Future plans also include specialized facilities such as a rehabilitation hospital, psychiatric hospital, super-speciality medical hospital, and museum.
Foundation’s Existing Healthcare Contributions
The Lata Mangeshkar Medical Foundation already manages Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Mai Mangeshkar Hospital in Pune, both of which have been serving the city’s population for over 24 years. Dr. Kelkar emphasized that LMIMS will build upon this legacy and significantly enhance healthcare infrastructure in Pune.
Dignitaries and Event Highlights
The tribute event featured musical renditions of Lata Mangeshkar’s Marathi and Hindi classics and was attended by several dignitaries, including Maharashtra Cultural Minister Ashish Shelar, MP Medha Kulkarni, singer Usha Mangeshkar, veteran actor Mohan Joshi, and actress Prajakta Mali.
Vision for LMIMS
Hridaynath Mangeshkar remarked, “Lata didi carried forward our father’s legacy by nurturing the Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital. Now, in her memory, we are taking the next step to create one of the finest medical institutes in Asia.”
Dr. Kelkar added, “Once completed, LMIMS will provide world-class treatment options and significantly strengthen Pune’s healthcare capabilities, with a focus on super-speciality care, research, and patient-centric services.”
Strategic Impact
The foundation’s initiative underscores the blending of heritage and healthcare, linking Lata Mangeshkar’s legacy with cutting-edge medical infrastructure. LMIMS is expected to become a landmark institution, serving not only Pune but also patients from across Maharashtra and neighbouring states.
Future Outlook
With the groundwork planned to start in December 2025, LMIMS is set to become a model healthcare facility, offering advanced medical services and reinforcing Pune’s position as a key healthcare hub in India.
