Pune: The investigation into the liver transplant deaths at Sahyadri Hospital, where both the donor and the recipient tragically died following alleged post-transplant complications, has hit a roadblock after Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) refused to proceed with the inquiry, citing a shortage of specialist doctors.
Probe Stalled Over Lack of Expert Doctors
Officials at SGH stated that the hospital currently lacks essential experts such as a gastroenterologist and a liver transplant surgeon, both of whom are required to evaluate complex transplant cases. Without these specialists, the hospital said it is unable to carry out the medical negligence investigation.
Dr. Yallapa Jadhav, Medical Superintendent of SGH, confirmed the development, saying,
“We have sent a letter to the police stating our inability to conduct the probe. To evaluate this case, we need experts like a gastroenterologist and a liver transplant surgeon. However, we do not have these specialists on staff.”
He further clarified that while private doctors occasionally assist SGH on an honorarium basis, it would not be appropriate to involve them in an official inquiry.
Background: Donor and Recipient Both Died After Surgery
The incident dates back to August 15, when a 49-year-old man suffering from advanced liver disease underwent a liver transplant at the Sahyadri Hospital, Deccan branch, with his wife as the donor. The couple’s family had reportedly taken a loan of ₹12 lakh to fund the surgery.
However, tragedy struck soon after — the recipient died on August 17, just two days after the operation, and the donor passed away four days later, on August 21.
The shocking double death raised serious questions about possible post-transplant complications and hospital protocols.
Family Alleges Delay in Medical Negligence Probe
The deceased woman’s family alleged that despite repeated complaints, the police had delayed referring the case to the SGH medical board to determine whether medical negligence occurred. When the case was finally referred, SGH declined to proceed, citing the lack of requisite specialists.
Family members have demanded a transparent and independent probe, accusing authorities of inaction and procedural delay.
Health Department Suspends Hospital’s Transplant Licence
Following the incident, the Maharashtra Health Department suspended Sahyadri Hospital’s liver transplant licence temporarily. The department also directed an eight-member expert committee to submit a detailed report within four weeks.
The committee visited the hospital on September 25, 2025, and has since submitted its report to the Director of Health Services.
Committee’s Findings Awaited
Dr. Bhagwan Pawar, Deputy Director of Health Services and member-secretary of the committee, confirmed,
“The committee has already submitted its report to the director of health services. A review meeting will be held next week via video conference to decide the next course of action.”
The health department is expected to take a final call on regulatory action once the findings are reviewed.
