Trichy:
Citing repeated maternal deaths, the Trichy district administration has temporarily barred a private hospital in Puthur from admitting patients for one month. The decision follows scrutiny over alleged lapses in treatment after around five maternal deaths were reported at the facility since 2021.
Pattern of Maternal Deaths
Over the past five years, the hospital recorded five maternal deaths — two in 2021, one in 2024, and two in 2025. Concerned over the recurring incidents, the administration issued a show-cause notice to the hospital on December 19. After reviewing the hospital’s explanation in early January, authorities decided to suspend inpatient admissions temporarily.
Latest Case Triggers Probe
The latest incident involved the death of a 30-year-old woman, Jayarani, in November, which sparked protests by her family alleging medical negligence. Following the allegations, District Collector V. Saravanan ordered a detailed inquiry into all maternal deaths at the hospital.
Inquiry Committee Flags Lapses
The inquiry committee, headed by special DRO Rajalakshmi R and including senior doctors from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital, identified multiple shortcomings. These included delayed recognition of complications, inappropriate management, poor decision-making, lack of infrastructure for high-risk pregnancies, absence of an ICU with ventilator support, and non-availability of round-the-clock qualified doctors.
Administrative Action and Directions
Based on the committee’s findings, the district administration imposed a one-month ban on patient admissions. Joint Director of Health Services GC Gopinatha confirmed the action, stating that the hospital had also been directed to conduct continuous medical education programmes and comply with all recommendations. Officials said the frequency of maternal deaths was alarming and warranted strict action.
