Guwahati: A doctor in Sribhumi district, Assam, is facing criminal charges for allegedly selling a newborn infant to a couple after an unmarried woman gave birth to the child, an official from the Child Protection Unit (CPU) confirmed on Thursday.
Illegal Adoption and Investigation
The CPU received information about an illegal adoption around four to five days ago. Upon investigation, officials confirmed the allegations and found that the accused doctor had forged documents to facilitate the illegal sale of the infant.
According to preliminary findings:
- The unmarried woman approached the doctor four months ago for an abortion.
- Since she was already five months pregnant, the doctor refused to terminate the pregnancy at that stage.
- A few days ago, the doctor performed a C-section at a private hospital and then sold the baby to a couple in Sribhumi for a large sum of money.
- The doctor falsified documents to make the transfer appear legal.
Legal Action and Baby’s Rescue
After uncovering the illegal act, the Child Protection Unit (CPU) rescued the baby and handed it over to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) of Sribhumi for proper care.
The police have registered a case against the doctor and other involved individuals under relevant child trafficking and fraud laws. The doctor, however, is currently on the run. Authorities have launched a search operation to track him down and arrest him.
This case has sparked outrage, highlighting the need for stricter monitoring of medical professionals and stronger laws against child trafficking in Assam.
