Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurates landmark project aimed at boosting healthcare access in Northeast

Guwahati: In a major boost to the healthcare infrastructure of the Northeast, Kolkata-based Peerless Hospital has launched a 300-bed super-speciality hospital in Ahom Gaon, Garchuk area of Guwahati. The facility was inaugurated by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday.

Speaking at the event, CM Sarma praised the Peerless Group’s longstanding reputation in financial and healthcare sectors. “With two hospitals already operating in West Bengal, this expansion into Guwahati marks a significant milestone in Assam’s healthcare development,” he said, as reported by PTI.

The project is the outcome of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed during the Advantage Assam 2.0 business summit earlier this year. “Since the MoU, the state government has coordinated closely with the Peerless Group to bring this hospital to life,” Sarma added.

Jayanta Roy, Promoter of Peerless Hospital, called the launch of the Guwahati unit a milestone in the group’s 30-year legacy. “We are beginning operations with 100 beds and will scale up to 300 beds by 2026,” he said. The hospital will offer advanced medical specialties including cardiology, neurology, orthopaedics, and critical care.

Roy emphasized that despite improvements in both public and private healthcare in the region, the lack of tertiary and super-speciality care forces thousands of patients from Northeast states and even Bangladesh to travel to metro cities for treatment.

“Conditions like cardiac, neurological, oncological, renal, and trauma-related illnesses often require immediate expert care, which is not always available locally,” he noted. “This new facility aims to provide trusted, high-quality medical care closer to home, reducing both the physical and financial burden on patients and families.”

The hospital’s opening is expected to significantly improve access to super-speciality healthcare for residents of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, North Bengal, and even cross-border patients from Bangladesh.
