CMOTS Now Offers Up to ₹20 Lakh Aid for Life-Saving Procedures; Focus Shifts Towards Prevention
Itanagar:
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Tuesday announced that over 200 patients have been given a new lease of life through kidney transplants conducted under a state-run initiative over the last seven years. Building on this success, the government has now launched the Chief Minister Organ Transplant Scheme (CMOTS) with enhanced financial support for a range of transplant procedures.
Sharing the update on social media, CM Khandu stated,
“Under the new CMOTS, we’re expanding support to ₹10 lakh for kidney transplants, ₹15 lakh for bone marrow transplants, and ₹20 lakh for liver transplants.”
The scheme aims to remove financial barriers to critical transplant surgeries, reflecting the state’s growing emphasis on life-saving healthcare access.
Shifting the Healthcare Focus: From Treatment to Prevention
While lauding CMOTS as a transformative step, Khandu underscored the need to reimagine healthcare beyond treatment.
“Real progress is when people don’t fall sick in the first place. A healthy society starts at home, in our communities, in how we live,” he said, urging the Health Department to invest more in awareness, education, and lifestyle changes.
Health Sector Boosted with ₹369 Crore Budget
The Arunachal Pradesh government has allocated ₹369 crore for the health sector in the 2025–26 fiscal year, indicating a significant policy focus on strengthening healthcare infrastructure and outreach.
CMOTS Implementation Underway at TRIHMS in Collaboration with PGIMER
The Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS) in Naharlagun is the nodal center for implementing the kidney transplant program under CMOTS. In a major development, TRIHMS has partnered with Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, one of India’s leading transplant and research institutions.
Health Minister Biyuram Wahge, during a recent visit to PGIMER, held discussions with Director Prof Vivek Lal and other specialists to plan a phased implementation tailored to Arunachal’s healthcare challenges. PGIMER has agreed to support Arunachal through training, capacity building, infrastructure development, and long-term collaboration.
Raising Awareness on Organ Donation
To ensure the success of CMOTS, the state government is also collaborating with multiple organisations to promote organ donation awareness and scale up transplant-related services, addressing both medical and social barriers to transplantation.
With CMOTS in full swing, Arunachal Pradesh is setting an ambitious model by integrating financial support, institutional partnerships, and a preventive approach to build a healthier future for its citizens.
