Bhubaneswar: A timely intervention by Dr. Nayak, a surgery specialist from SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, saved the life of an elderly woman who collapsed mid-air during a late-night flight from Bhubaneswar to Jaipur via Delhi.
Mid-Air Emergency
The incident occurred around 1:30 AM when most passengers were asleep. Panic spread through the cabin as the woman suddenly lost consciousness. Responding to an urgent announcement from the crew, Dr. Nayak, who was on board en route to a medical conference, rushed to assist.
Life-Saving CPR
Using only basic medical tools available on the flight, including a BP monitor, Dr. Nayak found the woman’s blood pressure critically low. With no advanced equipment on hand, he immediately began Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
“Her condition was grave. After a few minutes of CPR, her BP rose to around 90, and she gradually revived within 10–15 minutes,” Dr. Nayak told Odisha TV. He advised the family to shift her to the nearest hospital upon landing.
Viral Video and Public Praise
A fellow passenger captured the dramatic rescue on video, which quickly went viral on social media. Netizens hailed Dr. Nayak as a “real-life hero” and praised his calm, courageous response under extreme pressure.
