Government-Funded Patent Filing and Technology Transfer Support to Boost Healthcare Innovation Across India
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued an advisory directing all medical colleges and institutions across the country to actively promote the Indian Council of Medical Research’s (ICMR) newly launched Medical Innovations Patent Mitra initiative among faculty members, clinicians, researchers, and students. The move aims to strengthen India’s biomedical innovation ecosystem by encouraging innovators to protect their intellectual property and translate research into real-world healthcare solutions.
NMC Issues Advisory to Medical Institutions
In an advisory issued on July 1, 2026, the National Medical Commission informed medical colleges and institutions that the Medical Innovations Patent Mitra initiative offers fully government-funded support for patent filing and technology transfer.
According to the Commission, the initiative will enable researchers and innovators to secure intellectual property rights for their healthcare innovations while facilitating the commercialisation of research into medical technologies, devices, diagnostics, and healthcare products that can directly benefit patients.
Initiative Supports Research and Innovation in Medical Education
The NMC stated that the Patent Mitra initiative aligns with its broader objective of promoting research, innovation, and academic excellence in medical education.
The Commission has instructed all medical colleges and institutions to widely disseminate information about the initiative among faculty members, clinicians, researchers, postgraduate students, and undergraduate medical students. Institutions have also been encouraged to motivate eligible innovators to utilise the platform for patent filing and technology transfer support.
Strengthening India’s Healthcare Innovation Ecosystem
The Commission emphasised that active participation by medical colleges and research institutions will significantly strengthen India’s healthcare innovation ecosystem and accelerate the translation of laboratory research into practical healthcare solutions.
By supporting innovators through every stage of patent protection and technology commercialisation, the initiative is expected to bridge the gap between medical research and industry, ultimately improving patient care and healthcare delivery in the country.
ICMR’s Patent Mitra Initiative Offers End-to-End Support
The Medical Innovations Patent Mitra is a Government of India initiative launched by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to provide comprehensive support for biomedical researchers, medical institutions, and healthcare startups.
The programme offers end-to-end assistance in patent filing, intellectual property protection, and technology transfer, enabling indigenous medical innovations to reach the market more efficiently.
The initiative is being implemented under the guidance of NITI Aayog in collaboration with the Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP) and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). It seeks to strengthen collaboration between academia, research institutions, and industry to promote indigenous healthcare innovation.
Medical Colleges Encouraged to Participate
The National Medical Commission has advised medical institutions to actively engage with the initiative and encourage innovators within their campuses to take advantage of the government-supported platform.
The Commission believes that wider participation from medical colleges will contribute to faster innovation, stronger intellectual property protection, and increased development of affordable healthcare technologies designed to address India’s medical needs.
Medical colleges and institutions seeking additional information can access the Patent Mitra Portal or contact the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for further assistance.
