The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released the provisional seat matrix for postgraduate (MD/MS/Diploma/DNB) and super-specialty (DM/MCh) medical programs across India for the 2025–26 academic session, listing a total of 54,855 seats across various disciplines.
The matrix outlines seat distribution for NEET PG and NEET SS aspirants across a wide range of core and advanced specialties. Top branches include General Medicine (5,572 seats), General Surgery (5,046), Anaesthesiology (5,112), Obstetrics & Gynaecology (4,212), and Pediatrics (3,718). Among the super-specialties, Cardiology (482), Neurology (334), and Surgical Gastroenterology (87) are notable.
The data provides critical insights for aspirants targeting specialties such as Dermatology (1,503), Orthopaedics (3,176), Psychiatry (1,380), and Radiology (2,084), as well as niche domains like Pediatric Oncology (16), Organ Transplant Anaesthesia (5), and Geriatric Psychiatry (4).
Earlier, Medical Dialogues reported that the NMC had published state-wise MBBS, PG, and super-specialty seat data, highlighting Karnataka as the state with the most MBBS seats, while Uttar Pradesh hosts the highest number of operational medical colleges.
The NMC has advised all medical institutions to report discrepancies in the seat matrix to the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) within the given deadline to ensure corrections are made in time. Failure to do so may affect seat updates, the commission warned.
For students and professionals, the full provisional list reflects the ongoing restructuring and expansion of India’s medical education ecosystem under the NMC’s regulatory oversight.
