Vadodara: The National Medical Commission (NMC), in partnership with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), is set to introduce a PhD programme aimed at promoting indigenous innovations in medical devices and medicines. The initiative also focuses on strengthening India’s clinical research ecosystem.
Announcement Made at Bhaikaka University Convocation
The announcement was made by NMC Chairman Dr Abhijat Sheth during the 3rd convocation ceremony of Bhaikaka University in Karamsad, Anand. Addressing graduating students, he emphasised the need for research-driven medical education and innovation-led healthcare solutions.
Strengthening Clinical Research in Medical Curriculum
Dr Sheth highlighted that the NMC and ICMR collaboration intends to bolster clinical research and embed it deeper into mainstream medical curriculum. Earlier this year, he had indicated that efforts were underway to integrate structured clinical research components into MBBS training and upgrade research infrastructure across medical colleges.
Expansion of Medical Seats and Faculty Capacity
According to the latest report by the Times of India, Dr Sheth also confirmed that 18,000 additional medical seats have been approved nationwide. He added that parallel steps are being taken to expand faculty capacity to ensure equitable and high-quality medical education across all regions.
Focus on Rising Non-Communicable Diseases
Pointing to the rapid rise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs), Dr Sheth noted that NMC’s recent training reforms now include modules on self-care, preventive healthcare, and professionalism through the ATCOM (Attitude, Ethics and Communication) module. These reforms, he said, aim to better prepare future doctors to address emerging health challenges.
Lessons from the COVID-19 Experience
Reflecting on the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Sheth emphasised the importance of cultivating a culture of preparedness among medical professionals. He said that India’s healthcare workforce must be equipped to respond swiftly and effectively to future health emergencies.

A total of 496 students — including undergraduate, postgraduate, and PhD scholars — received their degrees during the convocation ceremony. Ten students were honoured with gold medals for outstanding academic performance.
