Guwahati: Public outrage erupted in Sribhumi, Assam, after a newborn tragically died at Lifeline Hospital in Kanishail. The family alleged medical negligence, prompting police and paramilitary deployment to maintain order amid rising tensions in the area.
Pregnant Woman Admitted Amid Emergency
Reports stated that a six-month pregnant woman from Bairigram was admitted to the hospital following heavy bleeding. The attending doctor reportedly consulted a gynaecologist over the phone, who advised immediate admission for urgent care.
Allegations of Ignored Warnings
Despite being admitted, the woman continued to bleed. Relatives claimed that repeated warnings to hospital staff went unheeded. As her condition worsened, the gynaecologist allegedly instructed the administration to administer an injection, and the patient was subsequently taken for a sonography.
Baby Delivered Dead in Ambulance
During the transfer for sonography, the newborn was reportedly delivered dead inside the ambulance. The woman’s husband alleged that the tragic death resulted from medical negligence and inappropriate treatment by hospital staff.
Public Suspicion and Media Chaos
The husband further claimed that when journalists tried to question a hospital representative after the incident, the individual fled, heightening public suspicion and anger, according to India Today NE.
History of Complaints Against Hospital
Residents and family members told Northeast Now that similar incidents had occurred at Lifeline Hospital previously, but no corrective action had been taken by authorities, fueling ongoing frustration and distrust.
Police Contain Situation, Calls for Investigation
Police confirmed that the situation has been brought under control. However, there are mounting demands from the public for a thorough investigation and strict action against those responsible for the newborn’s death.
Past Cases Highlight Regulatory Gaps
Medical Dialogues previously reported that in West Bengal, the Clinical Establishment Regulatory Commission (WBCERC) directed Megacity Nursing Home in North 24 Parganas, Barasat, to pay Rs 10 lakh in compensation following maternal death due to negligence. Experts say such cases highlight the urgent need for stricter oversight of private hospitals nationwide.
