A series of tragic child deaths in Rajasthan’s Salumbar district has raised alarm over a suspected viral encephalitis outbreak, prompting authorities to initiate an extensive surveillance and containment operation across affected villages.
Suspected Viral Encephalitis Behind Child Deaths
Five young children from Ghata and Lalpura villages have died over the past few days under what officials describe as “mysterious circumstances.” The victims include children aged between 2 and 4 years, including two siblings from the same family.
According to district officials, all children exhibited similar symptoms such as vomiting, unconsciousness, and altered sensorium—classic warning signs associated with encephalitis. Health experts from Udaipur Medical College suspect viral encephalitis, with a possible link to the Chandipura virus, though confirmation is awaited from the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune.
Rapid Deterioration, Deaths During Treatment Referral
Family members revealed that the children initially developed fever and vomiting, after which their condition deteriorated rapidly. Many were first taken to nearby health centres and later referred to larger hospitals in Dhariyawad, Pratapgarh, and Udaipur.
Tragically, several children died while being transported for advanced treatment. In one case, a child fell ill on March 31 and died the very next day during transfer. Another child who developed symptoms on April 5 also died en route to hospital care.
Delayed Treatment and Rural Challenges
Officials pointed out that the remote location of these villages may have contributed to delays in accessing timely medical care. Additionally, some families reportedly sought initial treatment from unauthorised practitioners, which could have worsened the situation.
Massive Door-to-Door Survey and Health Drive Underway
In response to the growing panic, the district administration has launched an aggressive door-to-door health survey and surveillance campaign.
Health teams have covered 528 out of 561 families in Ghata Gram Panchayat, which includes Ghata, Lalpura, and Karnagarh villages. Several blood samples have been collected and sent for analysis, while anti-larval measures are being carried out to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne infections.
Over 1.2 Lakh Households Surveyed Across Udaipur Division
The outbreak response has been expanded across seven districts of the Udaipur division. Authorities have deployed over 6,000 field teams, surveying more than 1.2 lakh households.
So far, 1,470 individuals showing symptoms have been identified. Of these, 924 have received immediate treatment, while 85 have been referred to higher medical centres. Public awareness campaigns have been conducted at over 13,000 locations, alongside anti-larval drives at more than 5,500 sites.
Awaiting Final Confirmation from NIV Pune
While initial findings point towards suspected viral encephalitis, health officials are awaiting final laboratory confirmation from NIV Pune. Meanwhile, intensified monitoring, rapid response teams, and preventive measures remain in place to control any potential outbreak and prevent further loss of life.
