Mumbai: A woman posing as a doctor conducting cancer research has been booked by the Amboli police for allegedly defrauding an Andheri resident of ₹9.68 crore under the pretext of investment returns.
Scam Details
The accused, Shehnila Ahtisham Syed, falsely claimed to be conducting clinical research at D Y Patil Medical College, Navi Mumbai. She convinced the victim to invest in her research project, promising to double the investment and provide a 4-5% monthly interest. Between October 2014 and February 2025, the victim transferred money to Syed’s ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, and IndusInd Bank accounts. The accused returned ₹1.18 crore, but the victim stated that this was not a profit but part of her original investment.
Legal Action
- The victim filed a complaint, stating, “The accused, in the name of clinical research, took money from me and others, used it for personal gain, breached my trust, and defrauded us.”
- The Amboli police have booked Syed under Sections 318(4) (cheating) and 316(2) (criminal breach of trust) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
- Authorities are currently searching for the accused.
The case highlights the growing number of investment frauds disguised as medical research projects, urging the public to verify credentials before making financial commitments.
