Rising Infections and Tragic Losses
Mumbai – The city is experiencing a worrying rise in dengue cases among children, with over 700 infections recorded in July alone. Among the recent tragedies was the death of a 7-year-old boy from Uran, who succumbed to severe dengue at J J Hospital on August 4, just three days after being admitted. In mid-July, a 5-year-old child also died due to dengue at Holy Family Hospital.
Sharp Increase Compared to June
BMC data shows that Mumbai reported 708 dengue cases in July, a sharp jump from just 105 cases in June. Doctors warn that repeated dengue infections in children significantly increase the risk of complications such as dengue shock and dengue haemorrhagic syndrome.
Symptoms and Risks in Children
Paediatricians report that common symptoms in children include fever, rash, joint pain, and sometimes respiratory problems, which can resemble other viral infections. They advise parents to seek medical help immediately at the first sign of fever, as complications like drowsiness or difficulty breathing can occur even after the fever subsides.
Expert Warnings and Preventive Advice
Dr. Deepak Ugra of Lilavati Hospital said most affected children are first-time patients, but a second infection can be far more dangerous. He stressed that timely and effective fluid management, whether at home or in hospital, is crucial in preventing severe outcomes. Dr. Ravindra Chittal of PD Hinduja Hospital noted that dengue patterns have shifted, with cases now appearing earlier in the monsoon season, making vigilance essential.
