Mangaluru: A fact-finding team, led by District Health Officer (DHO) Dr. Thimmaiah HR, visited a private hospital in Puttur on Monday following allegations of medical negligence.
The six-member team of doctors is currently verifying documents and conducting investigations. Dr. Thimmaiah stated that a detailed report is expected within two days.
The investigation follows a serious case of negligence, where a surgical mop was allegedly left inside a woman’s stomach during a Caesarean section on November 27.
Case Details:
- The patient was discharged on December 2, but developed a high fever a week later.
- She began experiencing severe joint, wrist, and leg pain.
- A scan confirmed the presence of gossypiboma (retained surgical item), revealing a surgical mop inside her abdomen.
- By the time the issue was detected, the infection had spread to her lungs, bloodstream, and other organs, putting her life at serious risk.
- A corrective surgery was performed on January 25, and she was discharged on February 15. She remains under medication and recovery monitoring.
Earlier, Principal Secretary of Health & Family Welfare Department, Harsh Gupta, discussed the case with doctors. Deputy Commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP also held a review meeting with the DHO regarding the ongoing investigation.
The fact-finding team’s report will determine further legal and medical actions against the hospital.
