Major healthcare expansion aims to bridge tertiary care gap in Eastern Uttar Pradesh
In a significant boost to healthcare infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh, Medanta has announced plans to establish a 400-bed multi-specialty hospital in Varanasi. The upcoming facility will be developed with an estimated investment of ₹550 crore, reinforcing the hospital chain’s aggressive expansion strategy in North India.
The decision was approved by Medanta’s Board of Directors, which has cleared a Built-to-Suit and lease agreement with Shripal Hospitality and its partners for the project.
Strategic Partnership and Development Plan
Under the agreement, the civil infrastructure will be developed by the partner as per Medanta’s specifications, while Medanta will invest in medical equipment, interiors, and advanced healthcare facilities.
The hospital will be constructed on a strategically located land parcel in central Varanasi, aiming to serve a population base of over 4 million in the city and surrounding regions.
Addressing Healthcare Gaps in Eastern UP
Highlighting the importance of the project, Medanta’s Group CEO Pankaj Sahni noted that Varanasi currently faces a shortage of large-scale tertiary care hospitals.
Most existing healthcare facilities in the region operate with capacities between 50 to 150 beds, forcing patients to travel to other cities for advanced treatment. The new hospital is expected to significantly reduce this burden by offering comprehensive and high-end medical services locally.
Strengthening Presence Across Uttar Pradesh
This expansion marks another milestone in Medanta’s growing footprint in the state. The hospital chain already operates a 950-bed facility in Lucknow and a recently inaugurated 550-bed hospital in Noida.
With the addition of the Varanasi hospital, Medanta’s total capacity in Uttar Pradesh is projected to reach nearly 1,900 beds, making it one of the largest private healthcare networks in the state.
Leadership Vision: Expanding Access to Advanced Care
Commenting on the development, Dr Naresh Trehan said the initiative reflects the organization’s commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centric care.
He emphasized that Varanasi, known for its cultural and spiritual importance, also requires robust healthcare infrastructure to meet the needs of its growing population.
A Future Healthcare Hub for the Region
The proposed facility is expected to emerge as a major healthcare hub for Eastern Uttar Pradesh, combining advanced technology, specialized medical expertise, and comprehensive treatment services.
Once operational, the hospital aims to improve accessibility to complex medical procedures and reduce dependency on metro cities, marking a transformative step for healthcare delivery in the region.
