The Calcutta High Court has directed a private hospital to submit complete medical records of a woman allegedly injured during a police lathi charge at a protest rally earlier this month. The woman is the mother of the deceased trainee doctor whose rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College in 2024 had sparked statewide outrage.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh, hearing the matter as a single-judge bench, passed the order after examining police reports from two Kolkata police stations along with a medico-legal report produced by the hospital.
The incident dates back to August 9, the anniversary of the trainee doctor’s death, when her parents led a march demanding justice. During the rally, which reportedly met police resistance, the mother was allegedly struck in a lathi charge and later admitted to a city hospital before being discharged.
Her husband subsequently lodged online complaints at two Kolkata police stations, urging them to treat the complaints as FIRs. He alleged that police personnel had attacked his wife, causing injuries that required hospitalisation.
- Police Findings:
- One station’s report stated there were “no grounds to proceed further as there was no substance.”
- Another concluded that no evidence substantiated the allegation, and therefore no FIR was registered.
Despite this, the High Court held that the medical evidence needed independent scrutiny, directing the hospital to be represented in court and to produce all related medical records.
The matter also comes amid continuing concerns over the parents’ safety. They had earlier sought protection, alleging threats linked to the RG Kar case, prompting Rashtrapati Bhavan to ask West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Pant to examine the issue.
