The new division was launched on the occasion of World Sickle Cell Awareness Day, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to treating complex blood disorders and childhood cancers with advanced medical technologies.

The inauguration ceremony took place at the Smt. Sharada Madhava Pai Memorial OPD Block of Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, in the presence of Dr. Sharath K. Also present were Dr. Sudhakar Kantipudi, Chief Operating Officer of MAHE’s teaching hospitals, and Dr. Anil K. Bhat, Dean of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal.

The newly established BHIM division is designed to offer comprehensive treatment for children suffering from serious haematological disorders, immune deficiencies, and pediatric cancers requiring advanced procedures such as bone marrow transplantation (BMT) and cellular therapy.

The initiative is expected to significantly improve access to specialized care and enhance treatment outcomes for children battling life-threatening diseases. Equipped with modern technology and supported by a multidisciplinary medical team, the division aims to deliver patient-centric care while advancing clinical excellence in pediatric oncology.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Sharath K. Rao emphasized the need for developing highly specialized centres of excellence that integrate clinical expertise, research, and medical education to meet the growing healthcare demands of both the region and the country.

Dr. Vasudeva Bhat K., Professor and Head of the Department of Pediatric Oncology, said the new division will focus on multidisciplinary treatment supported by skilled healthcare professionals, advanced infrastructure, and philanthropic contributions to ensure quality care for patients.
