Kanpur: A major controversy erupted after several media outlets mistakenly used the photograph of a Kerala-based cardiologist while reporting on the detention of a GSVM Medical College postgraduate student in connection with the Delhi Red Fort blast case. Both individuals share the same name, leading to wrongful identification by national channels.
Kerala Cardiologist Issues Strong Clarification
The Kerala doctor, a consultant interventional cardiologist from Calicut, issued a strong public statement condemning the use of his image as “false,” “misleading,” and “defamatory.” He clarified that he has no connection to the case or the accused, adding that the error caused him severe mental distress and reputational damage.
Actual Accused: First-Year DM (Cardiology) Student
According to PTI, the real accused is a first-year postgraduate Doctor of Medicine (Cardiology) student at the state-run Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial (GSVM) Medical College, Kanpur. The 32-year-old medico was detained by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) from an undisclosed location earlier this week.
ATS Seizes Devices, Takes Accused to Delhi
ATS officers searched the student’s rented accommodation in Nazirabad’s Ashok Nagar, seizing his mobile phone and laptop for forensic analysis. He was subsequently taken to Delhi for questioning and is likely to be confronted with suspects already arrested in the case, officials said.
Links Traced Through Phone Records
Officials revealed that the student came under suspicion during the interrogation of a former GSVM professor earlier arrested in the case. Investigators believe the accused was in regular telephonic contact with the professor and her brother, both of whom have faced prolonged questioning.
Suspicious Activity on Day of Blast
Sources added that on the day of the explosion near the Red Fort, the student was in touch with individuals allegedly linked to the terror network. His recent visit to Jammu and Kashmir also drew scrutiny. When ATS teams arrived at his residence, he reportedly attempted to delete data from his phone before officers secured the device.
Broader Probe Continues
The case remains under intensive investigation, with agencies uncovering multiple links between the accused individuals and a broader network suspected to be coordinating from outside India.
