Thiruvananthapuram: The family of a 31-year-old woman who was left critically ill after a botched cosmetic surgery in Thiruvananthapuram has alleged sabotage in the medical board’s report and warned of approaching the court if authorities fail to take appropriate action.
Hospital Ran Without Valid Licence, Says Family
The victim, a resident of Sreevaraham, underwent fat removal surgery at a clinic named Cosmetic Hospital in Thampuranmukku in February. Following complications, she had to undergo amputation of four fingers and five toes. Her family claims the facility was operated without a valid licence and has demanded strict action against the hospital owner, who is also a doctor.
“Despite clear evidence, the health department has not conducted a proper inquiry,” said Padmajith, the woman’s husband.
“We are disappointed with the medical board report and will move the court if the investigation is not taken in the right direction.”
DMO Suspends Licence Amid Public Outcry
Facing mounting pressure, the District Medical Officer suspended the newly issued licence of the clinic after the controversy came to light. However, the medical board’s report was deemed ambiguous by the police, failing to clearly address key concerns regarding the clinic’s licence and post-operative care.
Ethics Committee Split, Apex Panel to Be Formed
A three-member ethics committee reviewing the board’s report also failed to reach a consensus. One member expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of clarity in the findings, especially concerning how the clinic handled the woman’s post-surgery condition and the legitimacy of its operations.
Due to differing opinions, the police have referred the case to an apex committee and requested the Director of Health Services to form a panel to re-examine the case and offer conclusive findings.
Victim Remains in Critical Condition
The woman is still in critical condition at a private hospital in the city and may soon be moved to an isolation ward due to her deteriorating health.
