Mangaluru: Allegations surface over prolonged hospitalization at Yenepoya Hospital
The Karnataka Medical Council has received a formal complaint against Dr. Pandit, a consultant urologist at Yenepoya Hospital, Mangaluru, over alleged unethical practices.
Complaint details alleged misuse of medical facilities
The complaint, submitted by an individual accusing Dr. Pandit of questionable medical judgment, revolves around the extended hospitalization of Anil Lobo, Chairman of MCC Bank. Lobo, who approached the doctor for hydrocele treatment—a condition typically managed as a daycare procedure—was reportedly kept in the hospital for 20 days.
Concerns over judicial influence
The complainant alleged that the prolonged hospital stay was unwarranted and might have been an attempt to influence judicial proceedings. Lobo is currently in judicial custody, accused of abetting the suicide of the complainant’s brother.
In the complaint, the petitioner demanded an investigation into the doctor’s actions and urged the Karnataka Medical Council to revoke his medical registration if unethical conduct is established.
Professional ethics questioned
The complaint emphasized that Dr. Pandit, a seasoned urologist with over 25 years of experience, is expected to adhere to high ethical standards in patient care. It noted that the alleged misconduct was “alarming and a breach of trust.”
Call for transparency in sensitive cases
Highlighting the significance of transparency and evidence-based care in high-profile cases, the complainant stressed that misuse of medical facilities to potentially affect judicial matters undermines trust in the medical profession.
Awaiting KMC’s response
The Karnataka Medical Council has yet to issue a response or confirm whether an inquiry into the matter has commenced.
Hydrocele, the condition in question, involves fluid accumulation in the scrotum and is generally addressed through outpatient treatment. The extended hospitalization has raised questions about the doctor’s motives and professional judgment.
The case underscores the need for accountability in the medical field, particularly in scenarios involving influential individuals and sensitive legal matters.
