Proposal to Extend Service Tenure from 60 to 65 Years

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government is actively considering increasing the retirement age of doctors serving in super-speciality hospitals under the medical education department from 60 to 65 years.

During an interaction at Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research on Thursday, Medical Education and Skill Development Minister Sharan Prakash Patil assured doctors that the government is keen on retaining experienced medical professionals by extending their service tenure.

Senior doctors at Jayadeva highlighted that after investing nearly 35 years in education and training, they only get to serve for 20-25 years before retirement. Addressing this concern, Patil stated, “To ensure better healthcare services and make the most of our experienced doctors, I will soon discuss the matter with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and propose raising the retirement age.”

New Insurance Scheme for Doctors

In addition to the retirement age extension, Patil announced plans to provide an insurance facility for doctors in the medical education department. The state government intends to introduce the Jeevana Sanjivini scheme, which is currently available under the Health and Family Welfare Department, to cover these doctors.

Strengthening Medical Infrastructure at Jayadeva Hospital

To enhance medical facilities, the minister confirmed additional funding for Jayadeva Hospital, particularly for introducing robotic surgery technology.

“To stay ahead in medical innovation, we are committed to equipping Jayadeva with the latest machines and infrastructure. If Jayadeva cannot have the best, no other hospital in India can,” Patil asserted.

Additionally, the minister announced several key initiatives for the hospital, including:

  • Five new operation theatres for the pediatric cardiac surgery department.
  • A dedicated research department to advance medical studies.
  • An e-hospital and central monitoring system for digitized medical records accessible to doctors.
  • Salary hikes for contract and outsourced medical and non-medical staff.

The proposed initiatives aim to strengthen Karnataka’s healthcare system by retaining experienced doctors and upgrading medical technology.
