Mumbai: A 22-year-old MBBS student from Grant Medical College and Sir JJ Hospital died by suicide late on Sunday night, in a tragic incident that has left the medical fraternity in shock.
The deceased, identified as Rohan Ramfer Prajapati, was a third-year student residing in the hostel within the JJ Hospital premises. According to the Sir JJ Marg police, Rohan allegedly hanged himself from the ceiling fan in his hostel room.
The incident came to light around 10.50 pm, when his roommate Ritesh Vishwakarma returned to the room and discovered Rohan unresponsive. He was immediately rushed to the hospital’s emergency department but was declared brought dead.
Preliminary investigation suggests that financial difficulties and academic pressure may have led to the student’s extreme step. “So far, we have not found any signs of foul play,” a police officer said.
An Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered, and the police are in the process of recording statements from family members, friends, and classmates to gather more details.
The tragic loss has raised concerns once again about mental health challenges faced by medical students, especially those coming from economically weaker backgrounds.
