High Court Directs Health Department to Submit Status Report
The Jharkhand High Court has directed the state’s director-in-chief of health services to file a comprehensive affidavit detailing the current status of burn wards in government hospitals across Jharkhand.
The directive came during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by petitioner Onkar Vishwakarma, which raised concerns over the establishment and functioning of burn wards in all district hospitals.
Bench Seeks Details on Functioning and Staffing
A division bench comprising Chief Justice MS Sonak and Justice Rajesh Shankar instructed the health department to submit a detailed report. The affidavit must include information about infrastructure, availability of medical equipment, and staffing levels in burn units across the state.
Government Claims Burn Wards Operational Statewide
During the hearing, the state government informed the court that burn wards have already been established in all government hospitals and medical colleges. According to the government counsel, these units are equipped with necessary infrastructure and medical personnel, and are being regularly monitored.
Amicus Curiae Flags Shortage of Specialists
However, amicus curiae advocate Diksha Dwivedi highlighted ongoing concerns, stating that several hospitals continue to face a shortage of specialist doctors. She referred to a previous government chart which indicated that only four districts had burn units with adequate equipment and staff.
She further pointed out that the government has yet to submit an official affidavit confirming the establishment and proper functioning of burn wards in all hospitals.
State Plans Major Recruitment Drive to Address Gaps
In a related development, Jharkhand Health Minister Irfan Ansari recently announced that the state government will recruit over 1,200 doctors to strengthen healthcare services.
The recruitment will be conducted through the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC), aiming to address the shortage of medical professionals in government hospitals and improve patient care across Jharkhand.

The case underscores the urgent need to enhance critical care infrastructure, especially burn treatment facilities, which are crucial for handling emergency and trauma cases. The High Court’s intervention is expected to bring greater accountability and transparency in the healthcare system.
