Palamu Incident Raises Fresh Concerns Over Unregulated Medical Practices in India

A private dental clinic in Hariharganj town of Palamu district, Jharkhand, has been sealed after a woman died following a tooth extraction procedure allegedly performed by an unqualified practitioner. The incident has once again highlighted serious concerns about illegal and unregulated healthcare services in the country.

Patient’s Condition Worsened After Dental Procedure

According to local police, the woman, a resident of Kutumba in Aurangabad district, had visited the clinic with her husband for treatment of a cavity and swollen gums. Hariharganj police station in-charge Deobrat Poddar stated that the patient underwent a dental procedure, after which her condition rapidly deteriorated.

Soon after the treatment, the clinic owner allegedly fled the premises. The woman was rushed to the Hariharganj Community Health Centre, where doctors declared her dead.

Clinic Sealed After Family Complaint

Following a written complaint by the deceased’s family, accusing the practitioner of gross negligence, local authorities took swift action. The clinic was sealed in the presence of a magistrate on Wednesday.

Palamu Civil Surgeon Anil Kumar Srivastava stated that excessive bleeding and shock were likely the primary causes of death.

Clinic Had History of Violations

Authorities revealed that the same clinic had been sealed previously for operating without registration under the Clinical Establishments Act. It was later reopened after the owner submitted an affidavit claiming to appoint a qualified dentist and paid a penalty of Rs 5,000.

However, officials now suspect that the clinic continued to violate norms, ultimately leading to the fatal incident.

Rising Cases of Quackery Across India

This tragic case underscores a recurring issue in India’s healthcare system, where unqualified practitioners continue to operate, especially in smaller towns and rural areas.

In a similar shocking incident in 2025 in Barabanki, a woman died after a fake doctor attempted kidney stone surgery while reportedly watching a YouTube video. The botched procedure caused severe internal injuries, leading to her death. Police had registered an FIR against the accused.

Urgent Need for Stronger Regulation

Experts stress the urgent need for stricter enforcement of healthcare regulations, proper verification of medical practitioners, and increased public awareness to prevent such tragedies.

The latest incident serves as a grim reminder of the risks posed by unlicensed medical practices and the importance of ensuring access to safe and qualified healthcare services across the country.
