
New Delhi: Union Health Minister JP Nadda has launched the Annual Nationwide Mass Drug Administration (MDA) Campaign aimed at eliminating Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) in India. The campaign, conducted via video conference, involved State Health Ministers and senior officials from 13 endemic states, covering 111 districts.
Campaign Overview
The MDA program, led by the National Center for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC) under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, focuses on door-to-door administration of anti-filarial medication. The goal is to stop disease transmission by ensuring widespread drug consumption among eligible populations.
Key Highlights of the Campaign:
✔ Free distribution of filariasis prevention medicines from February 10
✔ Targeting 17.5 crore people across 111 endemic districts
✔ Targeting 90% coverage to eliminate the disease ahead of the 2030 SDG goal
Government’s Commitment to Eliminate LF by 2027
Speaking at the event, JP Nadda emphasized that LF elimination is a national priority, urging full community participation under PM Narendra Modi’s leadership.
“An LF-free India is our commitment. By turning this campaign into a Jan Andolan, we will ensure protection for millions,” Nadda stated.
He outlined a five-pronged strategy to accelerate elimination efforts:
1️⃣ High drug coverage through robust awareness campaigns
2️⃣ Monitoring & early diagnosis in affected areas
3️⃣ Involvement of political & administrative leadership
4️⃣ Cross-ministerial collaboration for effective implementation
5️⃣ Use of digital technology for greater outreach
State Participation and Political Involvement
The campaign was attended by State Health Ministers, including Satya Kumar Yadav (Andhra Pradesh), Ashok Singhal (Assam), Dinesh Gundu Rao (Karnataka), Brijesh Pathak (Uttar Pradesh), and others.
Nadda urged state governments to actively monitor the campaign, involve local leaders, and ensure effective implementation. He particularly commended Uttar Pradesh and Odisha for using digital tools to increase awareness.
Medical Support & Future Plans
To support affected individuals, the government is:
✔ Integrating LF management services into Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAM)
✔ Providing MMDP kits to 50% of lymphoedema patients annually
✔ Conducting hydrocelectomy surgeries under NHM and PMJAY schemes
Final Push for LF Elimination
Calling it a “last-mile challenge,” Nadda urged health workers to focus on targeted areas, ensuring India meets its LF elimination target by 2027.
“India remains steadfast in its resolve to eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis. Our collective efforts will help us achieve a healthier, disease-free nation,” he concluded.
