Calls for Stronger Measures to Ensure Safety in Workplaces
Silchar: Dr. Dilip Bhanushali, National President of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), has raised serious concerns over the increasing violence against doctors in workplaces across the country.
Speaking at the 37th biannual state conference of the IMA’s Assam unit, organized by its Silchar chapter on Saturday evening, Dr. Bhanushali stressed the urgent need to protect doctors’ rights and ensure their safety.
Violence Threatens Medical Profession and Patient Care
Addressing the issue, Dr. Bhanushali stated that healthcare violence is a complex problem and emphasized that enacting a Central Law is just the first step in tackling the crisis.
“All individuals deserve a safe working environment, free from violence. Any form of aggression against doctors and medical facilities is counterproductive—it lowers the confidence of healthcare professionals, discourages them from making critical decisions, and ultimately impacts patient care,” he explained.
He further highlighted that poor infrastructure and a shortage of medical staff force doctors to spend less time with patients, increasing the likelihood of conflicts. Effective communication and professional counseling are key aspects of resolving doctor-patient issues, and IMA expects the government to take necessary steps in this direction.
IMA Calls for Hospitals to Be Declared Safe Zones
Dr. Bhanushali proposed that hospitals should be considered “safe zones” and urged the government to implement:
- A three-layer security system
- Installation of CCTV cameras
- Restricted entry for visitors
