Hyderabad: In a rare and high-risk procedure, doctors at Gandhi Hospital in Hyderabad have safely removed a screwdriver that had pierced through the right eye socket and into the frontal lobe of a young patient.
How It Happened:
The patient, who suffered a penetrating injury to the right eye from a screwdriver, first sought help at a private eye care hospital in Hyderabad. After initial assessment, he was referred to the Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) on April 9 due to the severity and depth of the injury, which had penetrated the frontal bone and brain’s frontal lobe.
Critical Intervention at Gandhi Hospital:
On April 10, the patient was further referred to Gandhi Hospital, a major government-run facility, for specialized treatment.
- The ophthalmology team confirmed that the eyeball was intact, and the injury did not affect vision directly.
- The case was then handed over to the neurosurgery department, which performed the delicate procedure to extract the embedded screwdriver.
Recovery:
According to Dr Ch Rajkumari, Superintendent of Gandhi Hospital:
“Despite the complexity, the surgery was successful. The patient is recovering well and will be discharged soon.”
This case highlights the collaborative effort between ophthalmologists and neurosurgeons, and the critical role of public hospitals like Gandhi in managing complex trauma cases.
